The room was dark.

Pitch black.

Imran opened his eyes and groaned. He couldn’t see a thing.

But he could feel and sense that he was bound hand and foot to a chair. He struggled against the bonds, but they held tight. Someone had done a good job of trussing him up.

He groaned again. His body ached. After being dumped on the floor of the car, he had been driven for a while until the car had stopped and he was dragged out, down a flight of stairs and into this room where he had been beaten senseless by the goons who had abducted him.

It seemed to him that they had been careful not to break any bones, but he was sure that if the lights were on he would see his body covered in bruises.

Imran realised that he had been stripped of his clothes and bound to this chair in only his underwear. He wondered what lay in store for him.

Memories flooded back. Interrogations in the dead of the night at police chowkies in Uttar Pradesh years ago, when he had been an SP. Suspected criminals beaten black and blue to extricate a confession out of them. He had had a particularly good record of getting people to confess and had cracked many cases that seemed unsolvable.

After his posting to the IB, the interrogations had continued. Only, now they were not petty criminals and murderers but suspected terrorists and their accomplices. Again, Imran had been very successful in blowing up terror plots and exposing potential terrorists, saving thousands of lives in the process. It was what had fast-tracked his growth within the IB, eventually leading to his current role at the GTF.

Now, he ruefully reflected, he knew what those people would have felt. And he knew there was more to come for him.

Would he break?

He hoped not.

As if on cue, the door to the room opened and people walked in. He heard a switch being flicked and a single, harsh, white light came on, shining directly on his face.

He flinched and shut his eyes tight, screwing up his face.

‘Hurts, doesn’t it?’ Dee’s voice came from the shadows beyond the light. ‘But not as much as what I’m going to do to you.’

Imran squinted at the darkness. ‘What do you want?’

‘Quite a bit,’ Dee chuckled. ‘Well, my bosses, at least, want to know who you are working for. To whom Radha has been feeding information. What is your connection with the guy captured in Hotan?’ She paused. ‘Me? I only want to feel your pain.’

Through the brightness of the light, Imran saw a slim female silhouette come into his frame of view.

‘Beat me as much as you want,’ Imran fiercely told her, ‘Waterboard me if you want. I have nothing to tell you.’

‘I’m not going to beat you,’ Dee said softly. ‘Waterboarding is for wimps. I like the scent of blood. I like to see it flow. The rivulets coursing down, coalescing into a pool on the floor.’

She looked back at the men standing behind her.
